While I always thought it was odd in some instances (I worked with a very beautiful young woman who kept bemoaning her chin and need for some form of plastic surgery, but I could just not see it), I understand the 'superficial feel good' rational, and understand it trumping what others suggest is some inferiority complex someone simply needs to 'work on'. People spend a lot of money projecting an image that might not necessarily have to do with their body. How different is it really if someone wishes to project their own internalized image, and that method involves body modification?

I confess it isn't for me (getting plastic surgery), but even criticism I have thought of doesn't really hold up.
