I mean, people will do some stupid/crazy things for what they perceive as love. Valuing relationships is not bad trait to have but sometimes we put the success of a toxic or incompatible relationship above our own happiness. There were obviously parts of the relationship that made you happy and parts that were detrimental to your happiness.
