TopicDeadnaming vs. just being an asshole

I guess it depends.

Calling someone by their dead name is a tremendously rude, asshole thing to do and almost always explicitly transphobic in nature.

Calling someone by the wrong name? Depends on how exactly you're calling them the wrong name. Calling "Jim" "James" when he prefers the former? Rude, but not as bad as dead naming someone. Now, if you're talking a situation where, say... you deliberately mispronounce and list off a bunch of obviously wrong names for the person (such as when that one guy thought he was so funny for "not remembering" Kamala Harris's name), that's super rude and makes you a turbo asshole (and probably racist).
