That kinda is the problem, its current "definition" (if it even has one) is different from what it started out as. Originally it was just Symphony of the Night and its successors, as those were CastleVANIAs that incorporated progression elements from METROID. Which in the most simplified form means the original definition would be something like "game akin to Symphony of the Night, only problem is that phrase is highly subjective. At some point it became phrase "officially" used for any game with a Metroid like map progression, because I doubt Nintendo was going to allow for Metroid-like or Metroid-clone to become an actual genre. --- Official Teetotaller of PotD Dovie'andi se tovya sagain! ...
