Here's a true story for you guys.

A 15 year old is standing in a council estate (ghetto for British people) when a known local gang member walks up to him, thrusts a bag of heroin into his hand and says "hide this. I'll be back for it later. If you do anything with it I'll fucking kill you and your mother."

The police, arriving shortly after this exchange and who had been on the tail of this bag of drugs, tracked it down to the teenager. They arrest him for possession and put him on house arrest while it goes through the courts. In the end it was agreed that it wasn't his and he was cleared on a lesser charge of possession. The police were no help in protecting the kid from the gang.

The drug dealer returns to the kid and tells him that since he's lost his stash of drugs he now owes a debt. This time, he gives the kid another bag and tells him to sell it, and keep selling it or else he'll find his mother dead in the bathtub.

Remember, this is a dirt poor, uneducated 15 year old with no support network or role models and already facing a negligent police force that doesn't want to deal with it. The only person he has is his mother. And frankly, she's just not all there.

So he desperately buys himself a gun for protection thinking his life is in danger and tries to wait the situation out. Only this time, the police break down his door and find the drugs and a gun.

So, intent to sell class A drugs and possession of an illegal firearm. He faces 15-20.

The ONLY reason I know about this story is because I know the social worker who's job it was to argue on his behalf.

If we all listened to you, we wouldn't have any need for social workers, because we'd just agree that the kid is the scum of society, right? Don't want the crime, don't do the time, or some nonsense

A sane person could look at that story and realise that if someone had the help they needed to get out of a bad situation then a whole lot of injustice and cost to society would have been avoided. After all it's not just the kid who pays. It's you, and me, and everyone else who supports a system that puts people in prison regardless of circumstance.

It takes a huge degree of short sightedness to think that incarceration is automatically justice.
