The thing that annoyed me about the Remake is that it could have been amazing, but there were so many unforced error and easily-avoided screw-ups that just made the game less fun.

I platinumed the game and to the very last battle, it felt like I was wrestling with the combat system trying to get it to do what I wanted. I only felt that maybe one or two bosses felt "honestly" difficult; every other time I lost, it just felt like bullshit where the combat system was being an asshole for no particularly good reason. I grew increasingly infuriated with the sections of the game where it forced you into a slow walk for no particularly good reason or made you squeeze by a piece of scenery either to hide a loading screen or, more frequently, just because the developers figured it added immersion or something.

The visuals were phenomenal and the music was pretty good. The story was kind of ass, because it felt super-padded (unsurprising, given that they took eight hours of a game and stretched it to 40) and it wasn't even good padding - they didn't really flesh out much from the characters we already had and the ones they added in were pretty much all eminently forgettable. Some of the gameplay decisions felt truly bizarre - who on earth thought that mechanical-hand "minigame" in the tunnel section was not only fun, but fun enough to have us do it multiple times?

On the rare occasions where the game pulled its head out of its own ass for five minutes and got out of its own way, it actually was pretty good. But those moments were few and far between and the game just seemed violently opposed to the idea of letting the players have fun in an unscripted way.

I agree with the OP that the game was merely okay at best. A solid 6 out of 10; maybe 7, if I'm feeling charitable.
