He did, but the writing was going downhill and the whole dynamic of the show was kind of changed, which just kind of made things worse instead of better. Plus, depending on how you want to look at things, it isn't really the same Rimmer who comes back, which is kind of worse than him not being there at all. And then later they DO bring the original back, which is even worse because it kind of invalidates his character growth and the whole reason for him leaving in the first place.
