First, you have to realize that the war was unwinnable from the start for the Axis and sucker punching Russia was clearly the best way to go. You have to realize that Russia had just purged it's officer corp, looked liked dog **** against Finland in the Winter War, looked liked dog **** against Poland in a previous war, and got wrecked in WW1. Thinking Russia would've been capable of surviving a blitzkrieg would've been considered outrageous at the time. Lets not forget that the Nazis were able to take down Europe with the blitz when the previous much stronger German empire failed to do so in WW1. Because it failed, it's easier to point fingers and say it is dumb, but honestly it was a good idea that failed out of the inevitable.
