Wasn't the timeline on the whole checks thing something like:

Congress passes $600 checks (December 20)
Trump says he wants $2000 checks instead (December 22)
Dems go "Sounds great! Let's go!" (December 22; Basically immediately immediately after he said that)
Trump signs the original bill (December 27)
House passes an amendment to the original bill increasing the checks from $600 to $2000 (December 28)
McConnell kills the amendment in the Senate (December 30)

As a result, the original bill having been signed, McConnell killing the amendment, and Congress's term ending on January 3rd scuttling any efforts and resetting the process to zero, the checks go out at $600 at this point.

It is true that Ossoff and Warnock continued to campaign on $2000 at this time which is fine, I suppose, but I would think that was more of them continuing to hammer the same message from before that saga ended when the amendment was the question at hand and them not going for a messy message change in the literal final week after the reality of the situation in Congress changed at the end of that timeline meant the 600 -> 2000 amendment was now an outdated idea as the amendment was killed by the GOP Senate and the checks were going out now (because good fucking luck trying to explain all the details there in short campaign pieces)

But "the Dems" were pretty clear on the tack being taken here and while I agree the messaging is now messy as fuck at this point, they weren't lying or misdirecting or anything. Any claims to that effect are just ignoring how the events and timeline played out.

tbqh, I think they should go for $2000 now instead of $1400 because tbqh $2000 isn't enough anyway, and because the GOP is going to force this to go through reconciliation we're probably not going to see direct checks go out until March whereas the initial debate was dealing with the checks that were going out back in December/January. But I'm pretty sure if you go through the contemperaneous comments even AOC and Sanders were pretty clear it was $600 bumped up to $2000. I know AOC has since changed to "nah fam let's go with fresh $2000 checks" which is fine and again I think it's the better option of the two but it's because she recognized things changed and updated her demand here in light of how things ended with the initial round of debate.
