The gendered terms make people forget the root of the saying is that kids can and will get into mischief and trouble as they grow and start to learn and push their boundaries, ironically to be a little bit soft on broken rules that could range from minor disobedience to petty theft. Listening to some old radio shows where it was used, it was usually accompied with reminders of what the adults had gotten up to in their youth, and to show the kinder hand that wasn't always shown to them.

A sect of culture seeks to curb unwanted behavior and hates these kind of excuses. I can respect the logic if the extend they want to take it can be a bit ridiculous. They don't see a line between roughhousing and serial killing, a stolen kiss and rape, and just see just about any and everything as a form of bullying.
