And they are often in danger of being overthrown. Nothing has lasted longer than the Zapatistas and then explicitly do not have a formal military or any leaders. Their army is volunteer militias acting under consensus. They have almost certainly come the closest to implementing socialism of any organization on a large scale and if any state wanted to crush them they could easily do so. Rojava is in an active war zone surrounded by warlords and terrorists.
