What more do they need to mention other than slavery and the civil rights movement? I don't know what they teach in American history class but over here, it's always been a pretty broad-strokes approach. From what I remember from history class, it went Greeks/Romans -> Dark Ages -> Renaissance -> Golden Age -> American Revolution -> French Revolution -> Napoleon -> Colonization -> World War 1 -> World War 2 -> Cold War.

Coming from a former American history teacher, the issue is that those topics you mentioned aren't solely about white men. And that's what the textbooks focus on almost exclusively.

The foundation and creation of America wasn't just white men. Our whole thing is that we were a culmination of people from all over the world. American history isn't "white history". It's only white history when it's only taught from white perspectives.
