Some guy has promised to sell me his 100 shares of APHA for $22 on or before January 21, 2022. But let's say I don't want to buy them anymore. I can sell the promise to someone else for $1500. The more APHA goes up, the more I can sell the promise for. I can basically a whole year to watch it go up before making a decision to either buy the $2200 worth of shares (if I think it will continue to rise) or sell the promise outright.
