They are risen corpses that function on instinct and whatever senses haven't been too ravaged by death. So they would need to possess some kind of failproof ability to distinguish between human and humanoid. By that point, anything goes so if they want to attack aliens, they can attack aliens. There has to be a good reason why X won't work, not just "it just don't work". If we use dawn of the dead (original) as an example, it seems to be ability to infect the user. They attacked fly boy in the elevator and continued to try to get in and finish him, until it opened and he shambled out as a zombie, and they immediately stop trying to attack him.
