Everyone knows that Trump was always going to be acquitted - by that logic you could call the entire proceedings a waste of time, if you look at it through the narrow-minded scope of the only purpose of the proceedings being to convict Trump. It's about getting everything on the record, holding people accountable (as much as our broken system can), and, of course, optics.
