I really push back on this take. I don't think it compromises Spider-Man's character or makes him take a backseat in his own movie.

Tony Stark is phenomenal in the MCU, and there was a great opportunity to leverage that in growing Peter in this world. Stark had a lot of good lessons to pass on to him, and elevates Spider-Man's journey. "if you're nothing without the suit, then you don't deserve to have it." is a great lesson for peter beyond the great responsibility line. Yeah, it's not just about how strong Peter is, or how smart he is, or how many gadgets he has. Why is *he* worthy of this kind of power, and responsibility?

They carried it through and made a great movie, and a great character. Opportunities like this don't come along often. I don't think this was "shoehorning Tony Stark into everything", it's taking advantage of a great opportunity that would not ordinarily be available.

I certainly agree that Stark has been a great backbone for the MCU and that Marvel will be very hard pressed to move the MCU to even greater heights without the Tony and Steve duopoly. (Though I'm on board to see them try! I think it IS going to take folding in the X-Men and Fantastic Four to achieve.)

I also totally understand that it makes absolute sense for Stark to be the "father figure" in Peter's life.

It's hard for me to pin down and put into words. I just remember feeling a child-like sense of giddiness and joy seeing Spider-man in Civil War. That airport scene might be my favorite thing in the MCU. But I walked away from Homecoming kind of disappointed. And then the same thing happened again with Far From Home.

I think how the X-Men get rolled into the MCU will be telling. They are/were totally capable of being their own franchise. So will they also feel beholden to the greater core universe or will they be able to stand on their own.
