I used combos for a while just cause it's short term savings, but I think I lost money in the long run going back and forth between cable/DSL/fiber as I moved (depending on where you live one is a better option than the other). Eventually I settled on a standalone router cause it should work with any modem type.

Yeah. I do have one. The reason I went to the store was because I thought I might have needed a new one. But apparently, not all in the modems work with my providers. For the few standalone modems that I found, those were the ones that werent approved, IIRC. And my phone was running low on battery because I left my charger in the car with my BF. If only someone had been in the electronics department, I could have talked to them...
