Alright, here's the lead in: Headgear as you may know, consisted of Masami Yuki, Mamoru Oshii, Yutaka Izubuchi, Kazunori Ito and Akemi Takeda. Oshii had made his mark in anime already with Urusei Yatsura, Dallos and Angel's Egg. However, one year before Early Days, he'd made a radio drama called While Waiting for Red Spectacles, and a live action film titled The Red Spectacles. https://i.imgur.com/vSAw3AH.jpg These would lead to amongst other things, the live action sequel, Stray Dog, and the more popularly known anime film Jin-Roh. While the later titles were focused more on the name of the police unit, "Kerberos," the two Red Specs referred specifically to the visage of the protect gear which the unit wore. The lead role in the Red Specs film went to Shigeru Chiba (that's him in the trenchcoat up above), who had previously worked with Oshii on Urusei Yatsura.
