Grossly exaggerated, it was more like you could pay for perk packs instead of earning them in-game similar to Call of Duty perks like quick aim, one extra grenade, 10% more hipfire accuracy, etc. It hardly made online impossible, I didn't spend a penny, bought the game day one, was regularly on the top 10 of the leaderboards of 64 player games, and didn't notice a difference until the internet complained about it. Meanwhile developers like 2k allow you to buy a sports game and make your online player 99 overall if you pay $120 day one, and you can compete against 60 overalls that need to play 500 games online to even sniff 90. Nothing has changed in years, but they aren't EA so no one cares apparently.

I only speak about it because I played the hell out of Battlefront 2, it was my go-to online shooter for over 2 years, and watched people who never touched the game blow it all out of proportion because EA was the cool thing to hate that year.
