I liked Finn's role in TLJ, but it was an arc most people were kind of expecting him to do offscreen, so I get people disliking it. The casino section wasn't really pointless but I can see how people thought it was, especially since it ended up not serving a real point in the story (in fact, it failing instead served a major point in the story)

Phasma being such an underutilized character really didn't help, because it really hurt Finn's big character moment. It seems like they intentionally underused her to try to develop some kind of "Boba Fett" appeal with her, but it just didn't work.
