Have you ever been tricked (catfished) by a stranger online before?

15 y/o Riley Basford from New York committed suicide according to his family because of a split second of madness when he was BLACKMAILED into sending PERSONAL PICTURES of himself to extortioners and they demanded $3500 for it in order to not get it released online!!

He died on March 30 after his father's home in upstate NY just hours after he was bombarded with threats as part of a catfishing scam

He dreamed of being an environmental conservationist police officer and was targeted by someone who posed as a girl and befriended him

NY Police issued a warning to parents and teens about the scam after learning more than a dozen have had similar incidents where teens have fallen victim to it

The family is grieving and said he was his usual self the day he died as Mary Rodee said she had just taken him to get his braces for the first time before dropping him off at his fathers where he fed cows and chatted with his uncle and stepmom

His family only knew of the blackmail letters around midday where he was talking to a "girl" on facebook and he sent personal nude photos of himself to her

After getting him to send the embarrassing photos, tey demanded money or they would leak it to his family, friends and on social media

Darren Basford, his father said the blackmailer continued to bombard him with messages making him feel there was no way out and it broke him

Darren said his son thought the only way out was death because he didn't want to be embarrassed..and within hours after receiving the threats, he committed suicide

His mother believes it was a split second of madness that broke him as his father blasted the scammer as the devil

He did not want this to happen to another child and is "steaming mad" over the situation

The Police have now issued a warnign to all parents of this apparent scam and to not trust strangers on the internet who send them anonymous messages

A memorial for Riley was held on Monday with several locals and friends let balloons into the sky as the family is begging parents to watch their kids on social media..
