It's possible he actually is a registered Democrat. He lives in CT, so he might be a Democrat just so he can vote in their primaries, figuring the Republican candidate doesn't matter in a blue state and he'd rather try and get a conservative candidate on the Dem side. Not that he is ideologically aligned w/ the Democratic party in any way, shape, or form. Just using strategic voting in a 2-party system. In other words, he might be technically honest, but presenting it in a way as to create false implications of his actual positions.
(Of course, he could just be Unaffiliated, register w/ a party for the primary, then immediately switch back to Unaffiliated. That's what I do, but some people don't feel like doing that every 2 years.)
