the suburbs, as they exist in the majority of US and canada, need to be destroyed.
Near city centers lots need to be much smaller, on average.
multi-residence zoning needs to be much more common. theres no reason every 10,000 square foot lot shouldn't allow for duplexs.
Cul de sacs should not exist. Go back to the grid pattern and re-introduce street cars.
Commercial properties should be interspersed with residential.
Small offices should also co-exist with residential.
Start actually treating streets and roads differently. Is it a destination? Do you want people to be able to walk safely there? Then you need streets. Are you looking to move the most people in as efficient matter as possible? You need roads. Avoid combining the two.
Have more alley ways. Alleys that lead to your parking divert the traffic making it safer for pedestrians.
Suburbs tend to not generate enough tax to take care of infrastructure long term.
