I'm saying the way the dialogue goes it's like Shepard didn't even bother to try to convince Wrex to stand down because you have to specifically be a dick to him when Ashley steps in. I don't remember if the game shows that Ashley is watching if you choose the wrong neutral or paragon options. It might not since the game knows you're probably not trying to kill Wrex and wants his death to be a shock if you fail. I'm pretty sure Ashley is watching the entire thing because she doesn't trust Wrex and thinks it will go bad. But she does give Shepard a chance to calm him down.
