when i had a filling recently it was similar, but it's understandable (at least for a filling dunno about crowns). having one half of my mouth numb and the other half stretched out by the rubber wedge, it was hard to properly tell which side was higher or lower. they have to err on the side of being able to remove but not being able to add. lots of things feel weird immediately after getting them, but feel fine once you're used to them (a good example is glasses, where my current pair were a shock when I first used them, but now I don't notice it at all).

ive gotten several crowns before and i know what it feels like. doctors act like their patients are idiots because theyre conceited
