Yeah, this is a super dumb riddle where whoever is asking it can just tell you your answer was wrong.

If I had 4 eggs - "Well it said if, not that you actually had any"

and a thief gave me three - "I didn't say the thief gave you eggs, just 3 of something" or "it's a thief, they stole your 4 eggs and gave you back 3 of them"

And of course roosters don't lay eggs, so we can just ignore that part.
