When I played Skyrim the only parts I found fun were the magic bits, like the college and leveling up stuff like conjuration and offensive magic. The way you mention animation cancels leads me to believe it's an exploit though. Which could be considered combat, but probably not for a newcomer. I stand corrected, people do stagger.
