I think a lot of anti-mask sentiment (and not just from the usual suspects; even from your average apolitical citizen) takes root in American exceptionalism. Most of us are old enough to remembers SARs, and all the footage coming in from China with masks as far as the eye could see, and somewhere in the back of our minds we told ourselves 'thank God nothing like that ever happens in America!'
