The issue here is not merely eating the animals, but rather raising them in horrible, torturous conditions. Unfortunately, it's simply not possible to meet the US' demand for meat without resorting to such practices, so enforcing improvements in animal welfare is going to require people to eat less meat. In truth, that's generally a good thing, both nutritionally and ethically. Pig in general is healthier than other meat like chicken if you don't eat things like sausage or bacon.
