| HeroDelTiempo17 08/11/21 11:49:53 AM #177: | Honestly, Mario-style RPGs are probably distinct enough from traditional RPGs to form a subgenre. I didn't realize indies were working on so many. And JUST like the Metroidvania indie boom, this is happening because major companies basically abandoned their own model. I mean this is just how genres work, right? When it's just Paper Mario and Bug Fables it's an oddity, if there's like 20 of the things it becomes a category. I mean we had a topic a couple weeks ago classifying Earthbound clones as "depression RPGs" which was fun to think about but this is less of a stretch. edit: I will say I don't think it is actually defined by the "paper" aesthetic though so much like Metroidvania it's jargon that requires knowledge of Paper Mario's game mechanics --- I definitely did not forget to put the 2020 GOTD Guru winner, azuarc in my sig! ...
