In fact XIII might be less linear since at one point the world does open up for some exploration. There was almost none of that in FFX. The story, while good, can be kind of confusing at times so you'll definitely want to read the little journal thing in the game that helps explain some stuff better. I will admit the character Hope was extremely annoying. And Vanille's voice got to me at times.
