Frankly I'd rather someone be over-the-top while lacking self-awareness than be over-the-top and completely self-aware, because the former comes across as just a ridiculous human being while the latter comes across as a desperate camera whore. For me, if JD was just an over-the-top nerd who thinks he's a jock, that would be kind of fun. But instead he really played into this "superfan" archetype, but also had enough self-awareness to want to emulate his favorite players (who are distinctly NOT nerdy superfans).
