It varies by culture, from both ancient times and now. If you're amerifat, sure, you couldn't stand up to anyone. But an average healthy person is gonna be significantly taller, and, because of better nutritional understanding and access to modern medicine, stronger and more durable.

Humans didn't break the meta by being tough. Our Neanderthal cousins were actually better than us overall, but they were more solitary and needed more resources to build their better bodies. We won by outbreeding the death rate.

Im still sure when it comes to physical prowress they where still better than the average of today just bases on the tougher conditions they lived under.

Being able to live longer because we have better nutrition and medical science is another story.
