UBI. Just trillions of dollars every year coming out of thin air. That sounds plausible!
Businesses have made record profits over the last several decades while wages have stagnated.
Maybe we should just tax corporate profits adequately and we'd have that money.
Making the taxes at point of sale is key. american consumers spend the most in the world, any logical company wants to sell shit here. So tax them on point of sale. Doesn't matter if their HQ is in Ireland. Get rid of all the loopholes and tax breaks. There should only be tax breaks for employing legal U.S. residents.
Then we create a sliding scale. If people here are fully employed, tax revenue stays level. As automation and off shoring replace U.S. workers, more tax money rolls in to fund UBI.

It sure is interesting how upset employers are getting when they have to provide competitive wages because there is actually a viable alternative for people to take when they're met with "don't like these wages? You're welcome to look for something that pays better." It's almost like they've been relying on a non-competitive market to get away with providing pitiful wages for decades, while disingenuously suggesting that the workers are at fault for them making that decision.
I agree wages have stagnated, but this isn't true competition. It's boosted unemployment benefits, an artificial "competitor" created by the government. And it's an especially nasty "competitor" because even if they were equal, it's a choice between working or not working. The former has to be significantly higher than the latter to be "worth it".
I'd much rather hike min. wage up and index it to inflation, and work on putting UBI in place.
This unemployment stuff is grossly uneven and unfair across the workforce.
