I didnt mind it tbh.

Its not great by any means, and there are certainly valid criticisms to be had (taking three whole episodes before Picard even sets off on his adventure for one, or the fleet that shows up later in the series that is very obviously the same ship copy/pasted dozens of times by the SFX team) but on the whole I really dont think its as bad as its rep would suggest.

The main criticism I see thrown at it is that its too gritty and dark compared to TNG, the series as a whole feels a lot darker than much of TNG in places, but its one single story basically a ten-parter. TNG got pretty dark in its two-parters, too, until the story was wrapped up on a more optimistic note (thinking Best of Both Worlds as the prime example) the manner that Picard resolves the conflict at the end really does feel as optimistic and in-character as anything in 90s Trek, its just that the story had more installments to reach that point (and yeah, Id probably agree that there were too many episodes, too I reckon they could have trimmed it to 6 for a much tighter experience, or even just made it a movie). Its not like its a series where every single story is grim and dark and depressing, its more one story where Picard comes across a situation thats grim and dark and depressing and sets out to put it right, that story just takes the whole season. I would definitely like to see the new crew having a bit of fun and going on more light-hearted adventures next, but I don't think that one story starting off bleak is a cardinal sin.

Speaking of, I really liked the new crew, too, apart from Agnes, who is pretty just Alison Pill doing her usual awkward neuroticism, only this time IN SPACE. Pill aside, in terms of performance this is probably the best ensemble that a Trek show has had Stewart especially is definitely putting in a really strong performance.

It absolutely should have been shorter/tighter, the effects at the end got lazy, and theres a much derided plot development at the end (that I will slightly defend by saying that they were written into a bit of a corner by TNG for it, but its still so fucking stupid), but its not awful, and I do find myself looking forward to the second story.
