Don't see how that's incompatible with this topic. Wearing masks in the described situations does not protect against covid transmission, except for maybe the car if you're doing ride share and about to pick someone up. Certainly not if you're just commuting to work or out doing errands by yourself in the car.

I could venture to guess that it stems from a misunderstanding of how transmission is occurring, but can't rule out laziness or forgetfulness.
