Shit like this happens all the time, though. It's why there's something like 147 different "definitive answers" for who Jack the Ripper definitely was.

The problem is, no matter how persuasive the evidence might seem at a glance, we'll likely never know for sure whether it's right or complete horseshit. Even stuff like "Well, when I was a kid my grandfather admitted he was [insert notorious unknown person here]" doesn't really close a case, because false confessions are a thing and people lie/misremember stuff all the time.

Odds are, short of someone inventing a time machine and traveling back to investigate famous unsolved murders, we're never really going to know for absolute sure who the Zodiac Killer was.
