Topic	Do you consider remakes as mainline games?

Let's say someone wants to play the RE or FF series to completion. Would you suggest them play only the original games (and/or ports), can the remakes substitute the original games, or would you suggest them play both the original and the remakes? --- Into the woods, but mind the past...
