As I said earlier, you don't have to like the joke. But the intention of the joke was pretty clearly not to be negative or hateful.

Intent does not negate harm.

If Jim Bobford drives drunk from the bar, he's just intending to get home. He never intended to swerve and hit a family that was walking home from the bus stop. But just because he didn't intend to hurt anyone doesn't mean he didn't.

And that's the thing. No, maybe Chappelle isn't physically hurting people. But he's saying the same bigoted stuff that people saying we should be banned from public do. He's not trans, so there's nothing tongue in cheek about him saying trans people are freaks and have fake vaginas. There's no irony.

For fucks sakes, Chappelle didn't show up to any of her memorial services and there were 3. One proper funeral, then one large one on each coast. He never reached out to the family following her death. He's not a friend. But he sure as hell will use her as his "I'm no bigot, I have a trans friend who is a woman but I call a man" punching bag.
