There doesn't need to be a coup (in the traditional sense) or a "v for vendetta or handmaiden's tale" scenario for America to fall to fascism. We're absolutely on the path to--at the least--a situation like Hungary or Turkey, which are both illiberal fascist states.

If it makes you feel better, you can tell people in forty years from now that you lived during the time period when the US nearly fell to fascism. It's okay to tell those big fish stories for a moment's attention and a little bit of entertainment value.

I don't want to say nobody will get hurt because that wouldn't be true. People are getting hurt and will continue to get hurt. Asian Americans are being attacked because bigots choose to scapegoat them for the virus. People have committed murder because they think it'll set off the second Civil War. (It won't.) Latino/Latina families have been torn apart by attempts to scapegoat them as the source of problems in America. People regardless of ethnicity are being killed by a virus because others outright choose to be carriers for it.

But there isn't going to be a day where Adolf W. Trump forces you to swear allegiance to the the church of the white race anymore than there will be a day when a Democratic president rips the Bible from a God-fearing father's hands and tells him he's a bricklayer in the Soviet States of America.
