The like counter will continue to exist to give you the impression that the videos they present to you are popular, trendy, and that your peers like them (and you want to be like your peers, don't you?) - and you will lap them up like the good little sheep you are. But that's the thing. Will most people actually believe it's popular based on the likes with nothing to compare them to? Depending on hoe popular the content creators they like are, it's might still seem unappealing if the likes don't reach those high amounts that content creator they like reach...
