Gravitational force gets much more powerful the closer you get to the other interacting body, so it's constantly accelerating as it gets closer to its periapsis (closest point in its orbit). This acceleration essentially allows it to slingshot around the sun and make that big ass orbit, until it finally decelerates enough to get pulled back in by the sun after hitting its apoapsis (farthest point in orbit)

This is simplifying things a lot by assuming a 2 body system but it's good enough
