Not that it's been nearly a month, I can look back and see that yes, I did all I could, and this was just shitty luck. So after giving it a couple of weeks of mulling over, I went to the city animal shelter the day after Thanksgiving "Just to see what's available", and ended up being picked by this 3-year-old stray that was grabbing my hand through the bars as I was deciding between him and one other cat.
