It's more that Epic's launcher/store is unambiguously an inferior product. It's usable, certainly, but there's absolutely no reason for it to be as primitive as it is when Steam has had all of its missing features for over a decade. I appreciate that it's generally better for developers, but competing for my business by throwing money around to make Steam temporarily worse instead of trying to offer a comparable service does not endear me to them. I collect the free games whenever I remember them, because I have no reason not to, but I have no intention of spending money there until they commit to providing me with better service.
