The original Indiana Jones movies felt like a natural extension of 1930s adventure stories -- pulp fiction novels, comics, and film serials. Their handling the new time period was essentially playing Elvis so that the audience got it was set in the 1950s. It didn't capture the spirit of the decade or its adventure stories.
