I don't think it was regarded as sexual, I think it was simply that they liked to characterize themselves as being as tough as animals, eg as strong as a lion or as smart as a heron. Its like how we have team sports names named after animals, its just more of a symbolism thing I saw a figure of Bast at a museum in Indianapolis once which had some defined breasts.
