The presentation is great, it was a lot of fun and the characters have a ton of personality.

My only pet peeve was that since the characters were all children of rich families, it never really felt like there was much at stake.

If you end up checking out Kaiji, also check out Akagi, made by the same guy. Kaiji is a perpetual underdog story about a pathetic, kinda likable loser gettinging into a variety of insane games where losing means he either dies or gets sold into slavery. Akagi is about a thrill-seeking teenager that doesnt care if he lives or dies, and throws himself into the underground criminal mahjong scene.
