in book 5 Dumbledore tells Harry that the Prophecy that Voldemort heard could have referred to Harry or Neville, but because Voldemort wasn't told the part about "marking as an equal, and powers the Dark Lord knows not" he chose to act, thereby guaranteeing his eventual downfall
