I don't sympathize with the Owners but small market teams rely on young, drafted talent that they grow and develop over time. Let's say the Royal's scouting staff hit the jackpot and find the next Acuna or Soto and sign them right out of high school with a big, 7 figure signing bonus. Then they spend money on them throughout the minor leagues and teach them how to play in the MLB. If you were a Kansas City fan, how would you feel if that player immediately signed with the Yankees or Dodgers as soon as they hit their stride? the Rays just signed Wander Franco to a humongous long term deal. teams will always have the decision to extend or offer security in long term years to players they want to hold on to. i am not advocating for the removal of the draft process or service time altogether. all i want is for players to be paid what they are worth. right now the system incentivizes teams to get as much out of their players as they can while they're still making pennies compared to what they're worth. you have players who are playing like MVP's making league minimum. part of this is the rapid advancement and investment in player development in recent years by most organizations. you could argue that this is a benefit to the players as a lot of these advancements improve their performance, but the goal is to constantly have a supply of cheap, underpaid players replacing the older ones as they get more expensive --- https://i.imgur.com/hLHUnOI.jpg You act like I don't know my own way home ...
