I think it could be taken more than one way.

One way is the mother redeemed herself once she realized the fragility of life.

Another way is that it took the realization of the fragility of life and her own death for her to realize that her own family was slipping away from her.

Another way is that she's still obsessed with the vanity of having appeared as a good mother by the time of her death.

I mean, look at the way she hangs on the word "girlfriend". She's clearly still not comfortable with her daughter's relationship. It might seem like she's seeking forgiveness without really understanding what she wants to be forgiven for.

But then, these kinds of things are always complicated.
